Supernatural - Season 5

All hell, literally, breaks loose at the beginning of this season!

At the end of Season 4, Sam killed Lillith and unbeknownst to him set Lucifer free from hell.  Both Sam & Dean were unaware, that while they have been helping the Angels trying to stop Lillith from opening the 66 seals, that Lillith was the 66th seal.  So when Sam killed her, he unwittingly opened the 66th seal and the door to Lucifer's cage.

Ruby had a massive role to play in getting Sam to this stage.  She manipulated him, taunted him and even got him hooked on demon blood to get him to be strong enough to kill Lillith.

After the seal was broken, Ruby confessed all and finally Sam came to the realisation that he kick started the Apocalypse.  Dean came to the rescue and together they killed Ruby, even though they were too late to stop Lucifer from rising.

In Season 5 the rising of Lucifer brought the 4 horsemen.  This season is all about trying to get Lucifer back into his cage, while trying to avoid becoming the devil's and angel's 'meatsuits'.  Dean has Angel's watching over him and in this season it is revealed that Dean is the Archangel Michael's chosen vessel.  While Sam on the other hand has been chosen by Azezal (not sure of the spelling) as Lucifer's true vessel.

War was the first to arrive, riding in his beautiful red Mustang.  He causes havoc in a small town called River Pass in Colorado by pitting the residents against each other and making them believe that there are demons amongst them.

Most of the residents of this small idyllic town are killed by the other residents; however Dean and Sam finally figure out who or rather what is causing the chaos and put an end to it by cutting his fingers off to obtain his ring, which he uses to create the illusions.

The second horseman the Winchester's encounter is famine.  Famine rides into town in his huge black car surrounded by demons.  He creates hunger where ever he goes and he feeds off the souls of the people that he kills.  The episode featuring famine is somewhat gruesome, especially the opening scene, where 2 people on their first date literally eat each other.   Yuk!

The town here is consumed with hunger for food, love, alcohol, sex, attention etc..  Sam is overtaken by his hunger for demon blood and while fighting off 2 demons he succumbs to his desire for blood and drains both demons.  Now that he has regained his demon strength he helps Dean and Castiel overcome Famine and Dean manages to cut Famine's ring off as well.  At this point they are unaware that the ring is the clue to getting Lucifer back into his cage.

While chasing down horsemen and trying to avoid becoming 'meatsuits', the boys also hunt down other evil monsters like ghosts and rogue Angels, Anna, who are trying to change the course of the future by killing Mary and John Winchester and thus stopping Sam's birth.

Anna's plan fails when Michael takes over John's body and kills her and saves everyone else.

With the help of the king of the crossroads demon, Crowley, Dean & Sam find Lucifer in a small town where he is trying to raise Death - the 4th horseman.  Crowley gives them the original Colt and tells the boys to take the gun and shoot Lucifer with it.  The gang orchestrates an invasion of the town to encounter Lucifer, however prior to finding Lucifer they find Meg, and her Hell Hounds.

Unfortunately, Jo gets hurt in the attack and to ensure success of the mission, she volunteers her life for the greater good.  Ellen also stays behind to help the Winchesters towards success.

The boys find Lucifer and shoot him with the Colt but to no avail.  Lucifer is an Angel and he cannot be killed by the Colt.  The attempt to kill Lucifer is a great failure with a great loss of lives.

One of the most annoying characters of all the season's is introduced in this season.  While the character of 'Becky' is very annoying, the actor pulls it off very well.  At times during later episodes there are even times when you can almost identify with the character and feel a smidgen of pity towards her.

A few questions are raised during this season.

1.  How is it that Meg appears again in this season in later episodes and again in later seasons, when in the very first episode of this season she evacuated her vessel in order to save herself.  In previous episodes when a demon evacuated a vessel, then they did not occupy the same vessel but found a different vessel.

2.  I love this show, but I was a little bit disappointed to find that in one of the episodes Bobby is possessed by a demon.  How could this be?  You would think that by this far into the show, Bobby would have demon-proofed himself like the Winchester boys.  I think that was an oversight by the producers of the show.

3.  Does Dean ever track down the 2 hunters who kill him and Sam in the motel room?  It would be good if in a later Season Dean came across these 2 characters and made good of his promise!

Dean almost succumbs to the Angels' pressure to become Michael's vessel, but at the very last minute he changes his mind and he kills Zachariah.  He manages to rescue Sam but unfortunately fails to rescue his half brother, Adam, from becoming Michael's vessel.

The season evolves to a very ambitious plan.  Now that Dean can no longer become the vessel, Sam comes up with the idea that he should say 'yes' to Lucifer and then take control of his own body and jump into the cage.  As predicted, Sam meets Lucifer in Detroit and agrees to become his 'meat suit'.  Unfortunately, Sam cannot take over control of his body and Lucifer 'wins'.  The final showdown between Lucifer and Michael is in an old cemetery in Lawrence, Kansas, where it all began.  What they don't count on is for Dean to turn up.

I love this episode!  Dean gets a beating from the Lucifer controlled Sam.  Castiel is exploded by Lucifer for bombing Michael with Angel oil and Bobby's neck is broken by Lucifer for shooting at him.  While Lucifer is beating Dean, Sam's happier childhood memories come to the surface and allow Sam to gain control of Lucifer and Sam manages to open Lucifer's cage and drag both Michael and himself in.

Poor Dean, he is all beaten up and all alone, until Castiel is resurrected by God and comes back to heal Dean and give Bobby his life back as well.

Happy watching!
